Clinton Portis told reporters today that his ankles are "healing well" and that he thinks is "just a matter of time" before he has a breakout game.
Along with virtually every other aspect of the Washington Redskins, Portis' performance in the first three games has been under microscopic examination. He has averaged 3.9 yards a carry and he's on a pace to gain just under 1,000 yards. Only once in his career has he failed to gain at least 1,200 yards and that was in 2006 when he missed eight games due to injuries.
During the
game chat on Sunday there were a lot of comments that Portis had lost a step. Along with a few others, I contended that he lost a step a couple of years ago and he still managed pile up some yardage.
It's still early. Portis may not be headed towards a 1,500 yard season and it may not be a bad idea to get Marcus Mason and Anthony Aldrige some meaningful carries. But I have to think that he's going to help some win games this year.
