Vince Lombardi said, "Fatigue makes cowards of us all."
Former Redskins linebacker LaVar Arrington, who always gives a fair and balanced take on issues involving his old team (insert roll-eyes and/or sarcasm emoticon here) thinks that the Redskins became fatigued during their defeat in the Meadowlands on Sunday night. Here is what he said on his show on 106.7 The Fan in Washington (as transcribed by Rick Maese in the Post):
"Listen, they weren't in shape," he said. "I'm sorry, they just weren't in shape. ... and when you have situations like that -- to me, those are things that can change as time goes on -- but some of those guys weren't in the condition they needed to be to win that game."LaVar certainly is entitled to his highly biased opinion. However, it would be more convincing if he had some, you know, facts to back it up. Here are the facts. The Giants had a 17-0 lead with 23:30 elapsed in the game. Presumably, this was before the supposed fatigue set in. Over the last 36 and a half minutes of play, the Redskins outscored the Giants 17-6. Presumably, this took place whole the Redskins were getting "fatigued". Given the facts, maybe the Redskins should have gone out and scrimmaged for a couple of quarters to get good and fatigued before the game started. They might have had a better chance at winning. Maese's entry in the Post's Redskins Insider then focuses on Albert Haynesworth and his supposed level of fatigue. He recounts an preseason conversation with Rams center Jason Brown, who used to be with the Ravens. Brown said that he was happy that St. Louis would be facing the Redskins early in the season and outdoors at FedEx Field.
"I'm so glad we're playing Washington early in the year because it's going to be hot out there, we're going to be running hurry-up offense and [Haynesworth's] going to get fatigued," Brown told a St. Louis radio station. "And I'm not sure if you have watched film before, but when he gets fatigued, he taps out."A couple of things here. First, Brown and the Rams offense hurried their way to zero points in Seattle in the opener. Ten of their 12 drives lasted six plays or fewer. It's hard to wear out the other team doing that. Second, a look at the 10-day forecast at Weather.com shows that the high temperature is expected to be a deliciously comfortable 68 degrees, not exactly fatigue-inducing weather conditions.
