As the NFL labor negotiators inch slowly towards a new CBA that will open up free agency, we have time to ponder the Washington Redskins’ potential targets when the market opens up. Pete Prisco of CBSSports.com compiled a handy list of his top 50 available free agents. Yesterday, we considered some of the defensive players on that list in whom the Redskins might be interested. Today, we’ll walk down the list and look at some of the offensive players.
5. WR Sidney Rice–I don’t think that the Redskins are going to invest heavily in a receiver given the unsettled quarterback situation and the fact that they drafted three receivers in April. But if they do, the 25-year-old Rice is the way to go.
10. T Tyson Clabo–Again, not sure if the Redskins are going to make a large investment here but even though Clabo will be 30 before the season starts, he is the best available and the kind of tough guy that every team covets.
12. T Jared Gaither–The fact that he missed all of 2010 with a back injury will hold his price down but also is a major red flag. If the Redskins are convinced that he is healthy, the 25-year-old could be a good catch.
13. T Marshal Yanda–If the Redskins are scared off by Gaither’s issues, how about the guy who started 16 games at right tackle for the Ravens in his place? Yanda is 27 and can also play guard.
20. T Jammal Brown–Or, they could just forget about the three tackles listed above and stick with Brown, who came around at right tackle in the latter part of the year after adjusting to the change of sides and overcoming injuries.
26. G Davin Joseph–The Redskins may or may not want to upgrade at guard. If they do, Joseph, who missed the last five games of last season with a broken foot, is a logical target.
40. WR Lance Moore–The Saints are going to try to keep Moore so it will take a good contract to pry him out of New Orleans (and away from Drew Brees). He is not going to stretch the field but he will move the chains operating out of the slot.
47. WR Santana Moss–Possibly the biggest decision of the offseason will be whether or not to retain Moss. On one hand, he was the team’s most productive receiver in 2010. On the other hand, he is 32 and every snap he takes would be taking developmental time away from a younger receiver.
It is interesting to note that there are no quarterbacks on Prisco’s list but we knew all along that the solution to the Redskins’ issues at that position did not lie in free agency. And there are expected to over 400 free agents available plus players who will be released by their current teams, so this list represents just the tip of the iceberg.
