We have figured out who the locks and the probables are. Now it is time to sort out the rest of the Redskins and figure out who will make the final cut and get one of the coveted 53 spots on the team’s final roster.
Today, we project the defense and specialists; yesterday we projected the offense.
Defensive line (7)
Locks: Stephen Bowen, Adam Carriker, Barry Cofield (pictured), Jarvis Jenkins
Probables: Anthony Bryant, Kedric Golston
Other: Darrion Scott
Seventh-round pick Chris Neild could beat out Bryant for the backup nose tackle spot. It would not be surprising to see the team scan the waiver wire to find a replacement for Scott.
Linebackers (9)
Locks: Ryan Kerrigan, London Fletcher, Lorenzo Alexander, Brian Orakpo, Perry Riley
Probables: Keyaron Fox, Rob Jackson, Rocky McIntosh
Other: Markus White
White may be the 53rd player on the roster. He has made a quick adjustment from defensive end at Florida State to 3-4 outside linebacker. It appears that Horatio Blades will be the only one of their own free agents that the Redskins will release after re-signing after the lockout.
Defensive backs (9)
Locks: Oshiomogho Atogwe, DeAngelo Hall, Josh Wilson, Reed Doughty, LaRon Landry, Kevin Barnes
Probable: Phillip Buchanon
Others: DeJon Gomes, Byron Westbrook
What will be interesting to see is what will happen after Buchanon goes on the suspended list right after the roster in finalized. This could open the door for someone like Reggie Jones or Brandyn Thompson, although neither has made much of an impression so far. They could pick up a veteran off of the waiver wire. Gomes is an upset pick but I think that Mike Shanahan will keep his draft pick over Vinny Cerrato selections Chris Horton and Kareem Moore.
Specialists (3)
Probables: Kicker Graham Gano, punter Sav Rocca, snapper Nick Sundberg
These three seem to be pretty safe at least to start the season. All three will be a few bad plays away from being replaced, however.
The breakdown:
Number of players: 25 defense, 3 specialists
Not on the Redskins’ roster in 2010: 10
Average age: Defense 27.3, specialists 28.8
Full roster breakdown:
Number of players: 25 offense, 25 defense, 3 specialists
Not on the Redskins roster in 2010: 18
Average age: 27.2
Rookies: 7 (all 2011 draft picks)
Home grown (Redskins drafted or signed as undrafted): 24

Why do you not consider DE Worthington? That guy is huge and Doc Walker suggested that the coaches are high on him.

Wrong again....Thaddeus Gibson is going to be out Lorenzo Alexander or Rocky McIntosh. Alexander and McIntosh were not fits in the 3-4 and were the reason we drafted Kerrigan and Marcus White and signed Fox. There is no need to then reverse field and keep them. You make no sense.
