Besides getting to face Arizona’s secondary (porous in Week 1), another reason Sunday is an opportunity for the Redskins is the Cardinals’ lack of success on the East Coast.
Since the start of 2006, the Cardinals are 4-12 in games played in the Eastern time zone (not including a playoff win at Carolina). The year-by-year records are 0-2, 3-1, 0-5 (and they ended up making the Super Bowl), 1-3 and 0-1.
Whisenhunt tried something different three years ago when after playing the Redskins, he kept the team in the D.C. area to practice at Catholic University before taking the train up to play the Jets. They lost both games.
“Our normal practice schedule is about the same time – maybe within 30 minutes – of an East Coast start so it’s really not a factor with us,” Whisenhunt said. “It’s just more about the wear and tear your body takes when you’re traveling.”
The Cardinals later travel to Baltimore, Philadelphia and Cincinnati.
