Tony Romo and crew were dealt a crushing blow Sunday by the Jets, but they are still America's team, at least when it comes to social media.
People still 'like' them and 'follow' their every move. In a recent report by the Sports Business Journal (link) the Cowboys lead all the NFL teams in both Facebook friends and Twitter followers. No surprise here as transplant and bandwagon Dallas fans have flocked to social media to keep tabs on the 'Boys.
However, it was interesting to see where the Redskins fell on the list. A nationwide fan base, coupled with numerous players that are active on Twitter and Facebook, why don't the Skins have more social media pull? As you can see, the Redskins are decidedly in the middle of the pack.
It appears that recent success (Pittsburgh, New Orleans) and market size (Giants, Bears) are the keys to having seven-figure followings on Facebook. The Redskins have a good-sized market but not much in the way of winning over the past few years.
