Chris Cooley went on a podcast with Jimmy Traina of Sports Illustrated today and talked about his recent comments about Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. And while he did not walk back his comments, he did make it clear that he was joking when he said that he enjoyed watching Romo choke away a Cowboys game against the Detroit Lions.
“There’s no personal thing with Tony Romo,” the Redskins tight end said. “I do a radio show with Chad Dukes and LaVar Arrington [on 1067 The Fan] every Monday and we joke around and we have some fun and they ask me questions. People are just surprised when I talk like a regular person, I guess.”
Cooley said that as a fan of the game and as a player for the Redskins it was just natural that he would get some pleasure out of seeing the Cowboys lose. The loss prevented Dallas from joining Washington and the New York Giants in a three-way tie for first place in the NFC East. He said that his comments were all in fun.
“They said, ‘did you like watching them choke?’ And I said of course I like watching them choke,” Cooley said. “The biggest thing is, they beat us last week. So, obviously. But I still enjoyed that the Cowboys lost.
“I play for the Washington Redskins. I don’t see why anyone would think that I wouldn’t enjoy that.”
Cooley’s comments have drawn fire from various media types and by regular folks as well. “I’ve been getting murdered—murdered—by Cowboys fans, which is perfectly fine with me,” he said. Cooley is one of the more active athletes on Twitter and other social media sites.
Cooley blamed the whole uproar on what was lost in translation when what he said in jest on the radio was transcribed.
“I try to have fun, I try to goof around a little bit. I think when things get printed, sarcasm goes away,” he said. “The hint of joking goes away and it becomes a serious challenge. And then you think, oh my gosh, just chill out for a few seconds. I work in an entertainment business joking on the radio, I’m not honestly talking trash to Tony Romo.”

cooley is the smartest meathead on the planet ... you get what you see with that dude! you are awesome 47! Only an idiot would not get what you were doing.

Cooley loves himself some spotlight. I just wish he would produce more on the field before he really starts jawing to the press, but oh well, that ain't him.
On another note, I was just reading that Sage Rosenfels was looking for work. As a guy who knows Kyle's offense, I would think he would be interesting to take a look at. There are also a few other quarterbacks out there that might be interesting to look at during the bye such as Brodie Croyle. Looking back over the stretch of Grossman's games this season, and the fact that Beck couldn't beat him out for the starting job, I should think the Redskins would be interesting in checking out a few quarterbacks.
