Alone in the NFC East lead at 3-1, the Redskins are in rare territory. It marks the first time since 1996 they have sole possession of the division penthouse entering the Week 6 games.
Nine times during that span, the Redskins have entered the season’s sixth week with a winning record. In 2010, 2005, 2000, 1999 and 1997, they were tied for first place.
The year-by-year Redskins records at this point: 2010 – 3-2 (tied for first); 2009 – 2-3 (fourth), 2008 – 4-1 (tied for second); 2007 – 3-1 (second); 2006 – 2-3 (fourth); 2005 – 3-1 (tied for first); 2004 – 1-4 (fourth); 2003 – 2-2 (tied for third); 2002 – 2-2 (third); 2001 – 0-5 (fourth); 2000 – 3-2 (tied for first); 1999 – 3-1 (tied for first); 1998 – 0-5 (tied for third/last); 1997 – 3-1 (tied for first); and 1996 – 4-1 (first).
The Redskins’ last division title was in 1999 when they won five of their last seven games.
