During the course of the year, 11 of the Redskins’ 12 draft picks from 2011 were on the active roster. Here we take a look at each of them, how much they played, what they accomplished and what their future prospects are.
Previously we looked at nose tackle Chris Neild and linebacker Markus White; today it’s guard Maurice Hurt.
Maurice Hurt, G
Drafted in 7th round, 217 overall
On roster 11 games, played and started 8 games
2011: The Redskins probably planned to keep Hurt on the practice squad all year, let him go through an offseason of workouts, OTA’s and minicamp, and then see if he could fit in as a reliable reserve in 2012. But injuries to the offensive line accelerated the timetable and he wound up starting eight games at right guard. Hurt played fairly well—for a raw, seventh-round draft pick who had worked at tackle during his only training camp.
Prospects: Hurt took the place of Kory Lichtensteiger, who went out for the season with torn knee ligaments in the season’s fifth game. Lichtensteiger does expect to be back (he is a restricted free agent) but he might not be ready in time for training camp. This will give Hurt an opportunity to impress the coaches all spring and he will compete with Lichtensteiger for the job in August.
