Our friends at Rotoworld have come up with a comprehensive list of players who will be free agents when the new league year starts at 4 p.m. on March 13. We’re going to go position by position and take a look at the top players who may be available and how they might fit with the Redskins.
See below for a list of positions previously analyzed. Here is a closer look at the top offensive tackes available.
- Jared Gaither—Chargers
- Jeff Backus—Lions
- Kareem McKenzie—Giants
- Demetrius Bell—Bills
- James Lee—Bucs
This is a flawed group. Gaither was once thought to be a rising star but the Ravens let him walk in free agency and he could barely get on the field with the Chiefs before they cut him during the season. He did latch on with the Chargers and do a fairly good job there for the last five games so that might be a good sign and help his marketability. Still, it seems unlikely that the Redskins would make a play for the ex-Maryland star as he has had durability problems, the same issue that the Redskins are facing with the player Gaither would replace, Jammal Brown.
Backus (34 next season) and McKenzie (33) are both aging but have been very durable. For his 11-year career, all with the Lions, Backus is a perfect 176 for 176 in games started. It seems doubtful that either would want to leave his present situation but if the Redskins are looking for short-term help they could do worse.
Bell and Lee are younger but they have primarily been reserves for their careers.
