Our friends at Rotoworld have come up with a comprehensive list of players who will be free agents when the new league year starts at 4 p.m. on March 14. We’re going to go position by position and take a look at the top players who may be available and how they might fit with the Redskins.
Here is a closer look at some of the quarterbacks who are available.
- Drew Brees, Saints *
- Matt Flynn, Packers *
- Kyle Orton, Chiefs
- Chad Henne, Dolphins
- Alex Smith, 49ers
- Jason Campbell, Raiders
The asterisk indicates that Rotoworld believes that the player will get the franchise tag if not signed by the time free agency cranks up. This is certainly the case with Brees. The Packers may tag Flynn with the intention of getting some draft picks in exchange for his services. However, there are risks involved in doing that including a scenario where the Packers are unable to trade Flynn and end up paying their backup quarterback a guaranteed $14 million.
Even if Flynn is available he is very much unproven. Orton, Henne, Smith, and Campbell have had spotty NFL careers. If any of them had franchise potential they likely would have been hit with the franchise tag.
Looking at this group, it is easy to see why the solution to the Redskins’ quarterback woes seem to lie in the draft or in a player who could be released such as Peyton Manning.
