Our friends at Rotoworld have come up with a comprehensive list of players who will be free agents when the new league year starts at 4 p.m. on March 14. We’re going to go position by position and take a look at the top players who may be available and how they might fit with the Redskins.
Earlier, we looked at the available quarterbacks. Here is a closer look at some of the running backs who might be available.
- Ray Rice, Ravens *
- Matt Forte, Bears *
- Michael Bush, Raiders *
- Marshawn Lynch, Seahawks
- Peyton Hillis, Browns
- Cedric Benson, Bengals
* Player is likely to be franchised by current team
The Redskins are unlikely to be looking for a running back in free agency, at least not on the top end of the market. They drafted Roy Helu and Evan Royster last year and they both were productive when they got their chances. It looks like Tim Hightower, who suffered a knee injury in October, will re-sign as a free agent. That doesn’t leave any room for a front-line back.
If Hightower should not come back, however, the name that would jump off of that list is Hillis. Mike Shanahan drafted him in Denver in 2008. Hillis was traded to the Browns and gained 1177 yards in 2010. This past season, he had some issues with his health and he appeared to spend a lot of time angling for a new contract. He likely could be had for a bargain when compared to the other top backs.
