John Beck will be the starting quarterback for the 2012 Washington Redskins. Or he will get cut within the next month or so. Or maybe something in between.
Speaking to a radio station in Utah (via Hogs Haven and the Sports Bog), Beck expressed great confidence going into the 2012 season.
But I’m pretty excited about this upcoming year, because this last year there were a lot of things going into it we knew was going to make it difficult. And this year I got to get some more experience, and now, going into this year, I really feel a lot more comfortable.
Well, yeah, but the prospect of Beck starting actual games for the Washington Redskins in 2012 wouldn’t exactly be met with “excitement” by fans of the team. Well, unless you consider activities like massive protests and Twitter and message board meltdowns to be “excitement.”
Actually, there is a chance that Beck won’t be on the team at all in 2012. His salary is a cool $1 million. In the NFL world that is a reasonable amount to pay your top backup QB. But if the Redskins do what many think they will and bring in two new quarterbacks via the draft and/or free agency that could bump Beck back to third string. A million bucks is too much to pay a third-string guy and Beck could find himself in a situation where he will have to either take a pay cut or find himself cut altogether.
You have to give credit to Beck for keeping his confidence after the debacle last year, which saw the Redskins go 0-3 in games he started. Included in there was a 23-0 loss to the Bills, the first time in Mike Shanahan’s career as a head coach that his team was shut out.
Monty Python’s Black Knight has nothing on John Beck.

I suppose if I had the potential to have a million dollar salary just for not getting fired, I'd act all confident as well and hope for the best. However, I have about as much chance of being the 2012 Redskins starting QB as John Beck.
