The idea of Peyton Manning suiting up for the Washington Redskins next year has gone from being a long shot to being the conventional wisdom around the NFL.
Mike Freeman, columnist for CBSsports.com and about as well wired into the NFL as anyone, dropped this into his post today:
Speaking of Peyton, everyone I speak to in the NFL -- and I mean just about everyone -- believes if Manning becomes a free agent, the Washington Redskins will sign him.
Note that this is very different from a solid, inside report from either Redskins Park or from Manning’s camp. Time and time again the group thinking is proven wrong. It’s a different sport, but virtually nobody in the baseball community tied Albert Pujols to the Angels or Prince Fielder to the Tigers.
What it does mean is that Manning to the Redskins makes sense for a lot of people around the league and that the obstacles that many perceive may not be insurmountable if they exist at all.
We are a long way from this happening or not. But whether or not you think it’s a good idea, you should start bracing yourself for the possibility that it could happen.
