The Redskins might not have as much in salary cap space as we thought they did. In fact, every NFL team could have less to work with than originally thought.
From our friends at Pro Football Talk:
There’s talk in league circles that the [salary cap] number have been tabulated, and that the number is lower than expected.
Most have expected that the cap number will be the same as it was last year, right around $120 million. The article did not say how much the cap may go down, but it is likely to be only a relatively small amount.
We can only speculate why the cap, which is based on total league revenues from the previous year, might be smaller in 2012. There were scattered reports that teams were having a difficult time selling stadium advertisements during the 2011 lockout so that perhaps is a factor. The Redskins removed thousands of seats from FedEx Field in anticipation of building party decks at the stadium. For last year, however, the revenue from the removed seats was lost and not replaced.
