The Redskins are willing to push a lot of chips into the middle of the table to bet that Robert Griffin III can end their search for a franchise quarterback.
According to a report in the Washington Post, the Redskins will offer their first-round pick this year, the sixth overall, their 2013 first-rounder, and other picks in the early and middle rounds to move up to the second pick this year. That pick currently belongs to the St. Louis Rams. The Redskins would then use that pick to select Griffin.
Mike Jones’ report cited “people with knowledge of the situation” as the source.
The deal could be similar to one the Giants and Chargers made in 2004. San Diego took Eli Manning with the first overall pick and the Giants selected Phillip Rivers fourth. The two teams immediately swapped quarterbacks and the Giants also gave the Chargers their third- and fifth-round picks in that draft and their first-round pick the following year.
The Redskins and Rams are free to discuss making such a trade now. However, no deal can be finalized prior to the start of the league year on March 13. Many analysts believe that nothing will take place until closer to the April 26 NFL draft.
