Mike Shanahan said yesterday that there are 15 players left on the roster from when he took over the team in January of 2010. That total includes Anthony Armstrong, who was on the Redskins practice squad prior to Shanahan’s arrival, and Chris Wilson, who was with the team from 2007-2010. Wilson did not play in the NFL in 2011 and was re-signed by the Redskins last month.
Two additional players, cornerback Leigh Torrence and fullback Darrel Young, were associated with the Redskins pre-Shanahan. Torrence played in Washington from 2006-2008 before being released. Young spent some time on the Redskins’ practice squad in 2009.
Of the 15, nine play on defense, five play on offense, and Graham Gano is a specialist.
The number of players who started prior Shanahan’s arrival could be cut in half by the time the season starts. Some eight of the 15 are on the bubble to varying degrees when it comes to making the final 53-man roster.
