Hall of Fame wide receiver Art Monk, who played for the Redskins for 14 years, is the lead plaintiff in another in a series of concussion-related lawsuits being filed against the NFL.
The suit, which has a total of 63 plaintiffs, was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges that the league concealed knowledge of the long-term effects of concussions “engaging in a long-running course of negligent and fraudulent conduct.”
“Players who suffered concussions were told by the NFL and its agents not to be overly concerned, and were regularly returned to game action mere minutes after sustaining them,” the lawsuit said.
Ridell, the company that manufactured helmets for the NFL during this time, also is named as a defendant in the suit.
Monk played in three Super Bowls for the Redskins during their glory days from 1982-1991. He was the NFL’s all-time leading receiver when he retired with 940 receptions.
In a 1994 interview with Newsday he said that he had suffered three concussions during this career.
