Rookie preview: Adam Gettis

The need: Under Vinny Cerrato, the Redskins rarely drafted offensive linemen and Mike Shanahan has had to make up for lost time by drafting multiple players who can compete for depth and eventually jobs as starters. Gettis was the second of three offensive linemen the Redskins picked in this draft; they have taken a total of seven in the last three drafts.

The fit: Gettis is the perfect lineman for the zone blocking scheme. He is fast and athletic, just what Shanahan is looking for. He also is very undersized for a guard at 293 pounds. But  size matters much less in the zone and it the fact that Gettis is a relative lightweight allowed him t slide into the fifth round. Gettis also possesses a nasty streak that is always welcome on the offensive line.

The depth chart: The staters at guard are Kory Lichtensteiger and Chris Chester. Lichtensteiger was playing very well on the left side last year until a serious knee injury ended his season early. That just might leave an opening there during OTA’s that either Gettis or third-round pick Josh LeRibeus could step in to. Maurice Hurt filled in for Lichtensteiger and he will have to prove himself if he wants a role. 

Gettis’ upside: It is probably a leap to think that Gettis will start this year barring injury to one of the starters. But it could be another story in 2013. Lichtensteiger’s contract is up after this year and his job could be up for grabs. If Gettis can win a competition for the left guard spot he could start there for years to come.

Shanahan on Gettis: “Yeah, he’s got the quickness we look for, kind of like Kory Lichtensteiger. You know, he can play center or the guard position. He’s got speed. You can never have enough depth in that offensive line.

Gettis on Gettis: (on his nasty streak) “That’s what football is all about. You know, just getting after people, working hard, putting guys on the ground and getting back up and doing it again. That’s what I believe football is all about.”
