It’s been almost two months since the Redskins drafted Robert Griffin III with the second overall pick and we have yet to hear the Redskins’ offensive coordinator talk about his new prize pupil.
It has been about three months since the Redskins released O. J. Atogwe, let LaRon Landry leave in free agency and signed several free agent defensive backs and we haven’t heard the defensive coordinator comment on those moves.
And it was over four months ago that the Redskins hired a former NFL head coach, one who had won 10 games just two years ago, to be their secondary coach and that assistant has not addressed the media.
All of that will change today when Kyle Shanahan, Jim Haslett, and Raheem Morris come to he podium at Redskins Park to take questions from the press corps.
With Shanahan, of course, the focus will be on Griffin’s development. It would be shocking to hear him say anything negative about the rookie but you can often glean something when praise is not very glowing or not offered at all. In addition to RG3, Shanahan will also talk about the guys to whom he’ll be throwing and handing off and the players who will be blocking for him.
Haslett will be discussing a defense that is strong and deep up front but very unsettled in the backfield. It’s a unit that improved last year but it has yet to develop into a unit that consistently applies pressure to the quarterback and creates piles of turnovers. Haslett will talk about how they are trying to get there.
The man in charge of that muddled backfield is Morris, who was the Bucs’ secondary coach before being promoted to head coach when Jon Gruden was fired in 2009. Ever since Joe Gibbs was here for his second go-around, the Redskins have had a safeties coach and a cornerbacks coach. They combined the responsibilities for Morris so we will go over the secondary with him and also talk about his vocal style on the field.
That will take place starting at 12:30 until about 1:30 so be prepared for a stream of tweets on your timelines around then. The minicamp practice is at 2:00 and will run until about 4:00. After that it will be Shanahan at the podium. It appears that RG3 will not be talking today as he has after every practice open to the media so far. Another player may talk but that has not been announced.
