As we wait for Robert Griffin III to sign his rookie contract, a lot of interested folks are saying that once Andrew Luck signs or once more players drafted in the top eight in the draft sign, RG3’s deal will fall into line.
But there is a problem with that line of thinking. Griffin can’t wait for Luck to sign. It looks like Luck won’t sign until at least a week after Griffin is scheduled to report to training camp.
After tweeting on multiple occasions that Luck is “close” to signing his contract, Colts owner Jim Irsay has changed his tune somewhat. He said last night that Luck will be in training camp on time. The Colts’ rookies are scheduled to report on July 25.
The Redskins’ rookies report this Monday, July 16. If Griffin waits for Luck to get his deal done before he signs he could miss a lot of valuable time.
And the Redskins and Ben Dogra, Griffin’s agent, won’t be able to rely on guidance from the contracts of any other top-five picks without Griffin missing significant time. After the Redskins the next team with a top-five pick to report is the Browns, who go in on the 24th.
So if Griffin is going to join his teammates on time Dogra and the Redskins are going to have to find some middle ground on whatever detail issues remain. The money is set by the CBA. He will get a shade over $21 million over four years with a signing bonus of about $14 million with all of the money guaranteed.
