We have been over the highlights of Thursday’s game and discussed the good and the bad. But there were some players whose performances were in neither category because they never got off the bench. Here are the players who did not play according to the NFL Gamebook who were not among the players Mike Shanahan said would sit out.
RB Lennon Creer
RG Antwan Bailey
OLB Monte Lewis
G Tony Moll
OT Willie Smith
OT James Lee
NT Dennis Johnson
Moll just joined the team a week ago and had his first practice on Tuesday so there wasn’t much of a chance he would play in any case.
Creer and Bailey two of seven running backs on the roster and with only one playing at a time and a limited number of snaps they couldn’t all play. They shouldn’t be too concerned about sitting this week but if they don’t get in next week it’s another story.
Smith, who started three games at left tackle last year, and Lee, a three-year NFL veteran, both missed some practice time with knee problems and their omission from the line rotation was not totally surprising. But it appears that both of them have some work to do to make the roster.
Lewis and Johnson both are trying to win a job at deep positions. As with the running backs, they shouldn’t be too concerned with sitting out but they need to get some playing time soon.
There is still time for the players who were spectators on Thursday to make an impression. But, with the first round of cuts coming two weeks from Monday and the final cut 20 days away, these players certainly are aware that it gets late early in the NFL.
