Here is what you need to know on this Monday morning, the beginning of the week of the Redskins’ first preseason game:
Battles at wide receiver
I’m beginning to think that there are two separate battles brewing for the last two wide receiver spots. The locks are Garçon, Hankerson, Moss, and Morgan. It looks like the fifth receiver also will serve as the kick returner. That battle appears to be between Brandon Banks and Aldrick Robinson. There is a long way do go there as Robinson needs to do some returning during a game and both need to show that they can get open and catch passes with any degree of consistency.
The other battle is for the sixth wide receiver, who likely will be inactive on many game days unless one of the top four is ailing. That one is between Anthony Armstrong and the newly acquired Dez Briscoe.
I don’t want to leave Terrence Austin out of the picture here. He could potentially fit into either role.
Richmond training camp narrowed to four sites
Virginia governor Bob McDonnell was at Redskins Park for fan appreciation day and he said that the City of Richmond is working to settle on a site where the Redskins will hold training camp starting in 2013. He said that Redskins officials are set to visit Richmond soon as part of completing the site selection process.
Per CBS6 in Richmond, four sites are under consideration:
--Sports Backers Stadium near the Boulevard
--City Stadium
--Virginia Union University
--A site behind the Science Museum
All of the sites will require considerable work and the city is armed with a budget of a half a million dollars to get it done. Richmond has struggled with building and improving sports venues in recent years (see the crumbling Richmond Coliseum and dated Diamond as evidence) so they will be tested here.
In case you missed it
I had a pretty neat/scary picture of the crowd trying to get RG3’s autograph on Saturday in the Need to Know yesterday. Also, Tarik talked to Tyler Polumbus about the tackle’s sudden elevation to the first team.
Days until: Preseason opener @ Bills 3; RG3 vs. Luck @ FedEX Field 19; final cuts 25; Redskins @ Saints 34; home opener vs. Bengals 48
