Here is what you need to know on this Thursday, the day before the Redskins cut to the team down to 53 players.
Redskins emerge from Bucs game unscathed
The headlines last night were about Brandon Banks and Billy Cudiff but the real news was no news.
The Redskins suffered no major injuries against the Bucs and they will go into the regular season with as much of their preseason depth chart intact as just about any other NFL team.
There were some training camp bumps, bruises and twists but the only projected starter who is certain to miss the season opener is Jammal Brown. The most serious injury was the torn ACL suffered by reserve nose tackle Chris Neild.
The good luck won’t necessarily continue but for now it’s so far, so good.
Maligned OL performs well in preseason
I tweeted about this late last night but since many of you weren’t awake and monitoring Twitter about an hour after last night’s game ended here it is again.
The Redskins’ offensive line has taken a ton of criticism and a lot of it is justified. But consider this—in 16 quarters of preseason football, the Redskins did not allow a sack in 15 of them.
That’s starters and reserves and it counts a lot of snaps playing against defenders who will never see the field in a regular NFL game. And the one quarter where they gave up sacks it was their starters against the Bears’ starters and they gave up three of them.
Still, even given the limited meaning that one can assign to preseason stats, that doesn’t point to a disaster in the making along the O-line, assuming reasonable luck in the health department.
In the rushing game the line blocked well enough for the team to average 4.5 yards per carry. Alfred Morris did not become a rookie sensation on his own.
Today’s schedule
The players are off and there is no media availability. The coaches are spending the day and a good chunk of the night reviewing film and talking roster strategy.
