Here is what you need to know on this Thursday, one month before the Redskins regular season home opener against the Bengals.
Portis retirement news conference at 2:30
You can tune in to Clinton Portis’ retirement news conference today at 2:30 on Comcast SportsNet. There should be a few laughs as one of the toughest runners in recent years looks back on his career.
Portis issued a thank you letter to Redskins Nation yesterday:
I entered this city wide-eyed and excited. I was a 22-year old kid who didn’t know the storied history or the timeless legacy that is The Redskin Nation. What I did know was that I was called upon to deliver more than just touchdowns. I was brought here to work alongside a great group of teammates to uplift the spirits of an organization, a community, and the best fans in the world.
Today, I hang up my jersey and untie my cleats. I reflect on my time here as some of the best times I can remember and hope that it is as memorable for you as it is for me. I want to thank my teammates, my family, and my fans for all the love and support and for allowing me to grow from a boy into a man in a city that I will forever love.
A special thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Snyder for everything they have done for me and my family, Coach Shannahan for giving me the chance of a lifetime, and Coach Gibbs for making me a man. LOVE YOU ALL!

It’s Shanahan vs. Kromer on Sept. 9
With head coach Sean Peyton being suspended for the entire 2012 season and interim coach Joe Vitt serving a six-game suspension to start the season, the Saints’ bounty scandal has forced them to name what may be the NFL’s first interim interim head coach.
The Saints have decided that offensive line coach Aaron Kromer will be the head man when they host the Redskins to open the NFL season on Sept. 9 and for the five games after that.
Kromer has never been a head coach on any level. He will be matched against Mike Shanahan, who has been a head coach in 276 NFL games (157 wins).
While that particular matchup may favor the Redskins, fans might want to keep in mind that other, perhaps more important experience factors favor the Saints. New Orleans will start Drew Brees and quarterback and he has started 153 NFL games and he has passed for 40,742 yards. Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will be making his NFL debut.
Today’s schedule
—11:50 practice (closed to
media after first 30 minutes_
—After practice (approx. 1:30) open locker room and Shanahan news conference
—2:30 Clinton Portis retirement news conference

Aldrick Robinson had a good game against the Bears but he knows he needs to perform consistently.
Anthony Armstrong, who could lose his job to Robinson, knows that time is growing short for him to show the coaches what he can do.
