These guys need to play a game
For the second straight practice, we had some rough stuff on the field. Saturday, a couple skirmishes broke out and Mike Shanahan pulled the team into a huddle to tell them to tell them to knock it off.
Shanahan called another team huddle today. This time it was after Josh Wilson intercepted a Robert Griffin III pass. Wilson went across the field with the return and Trent Williams was a little too rough in taking him down. The 325-pound tackle sent the 188-pound cornerback crashing to the ground. Wilson bounced back up and some trash talking ensued. Shanahan decided to cool things down before they got out of hand.
Moving on up
Adam Gettis was listed as the second team right guard on the dept chart that came out before practice. And, sure enough, when starter Chris Chester went out with a mild ankle sprain about midway through practice, Gettis was in at right guard with the first team the rest of the day.
Chris Baker got a few series spelling Barry Cofield at nose guard. He has flashed some ability and I think they might have to find a roster spot for him.
Catching my eye
Running back Tristan Davis has looked good since coming off of the disabled list. He runs smoothly and has a good burst. I’m not sure if he has a chance to stay in a crowded backfield but he could end up on the top of the list the Redskins would call if injury created a need.
On the bubble
I have Aldrick Robinson making the 53-man roster but he is very much on the bubble. He has been inconsistent as a receiver but today was one of his better days. On one pass from Kirk Cousins, Robinson was in a crowd of defenders. He attacked the ball, coming back towards the quarterback to separate himself from the defense and make the catch. A year ago, Robinson would have stood and waited for the ball to come to him and it would have been knocked away or intercepted. He’s learning.
RG3 report
As we have come to expect, Griffin had some hot streaks and cold streaks. He hit just two of his first nine passes and towards the end of that period he threw an ugly interception when it looked like he and Pierre Garçon were not on the same page. Josh Wilson got the pick and that led to the above-noted hard tackle and subsequent Shanahan huddle.
He seemed to gain his rhythm as practice went on. He had a good stretch during a two-minute drill where he completed five of seven passes. All of the completions were in the short to intermediate range but for the most part Griffin hit his targets in stride with some zip on the ball.
On the day, Griffin was 10 for 20 with the one interception.
His targets:
Complete: Moss 4, Hankerson, Cooley 3, Garçon, Helu
Incomplete: Cooley, Hankerson, Moss 3, batted down 2, Garçon 3 (1 intercepted)
