Here is what you need to know on this Thursday, September 27, three days before the Redskins take on the Bucs in a game that will be officiated by real referees.
The deal is officially done
As it turns out, the Inaccurate Reception in Seattle was a unifier, not a divider.
Although the details as to who “won” or “lost” the negotiation have yet to come out, it does appear that the NFL owners moved their position and made some concessions (a word that, no doubt, leaves a bad taste in the mouths of many owners) to get a deal done. Although the deal has yet to be formally ratified, the real referees will be on the field starting tonight in Baltimore.
It looks like the events in Seattle, a perfect storm of the wrong call very obviously being made, the replacement zebras looking utterly confused and incompetent in the process, and a national TV audience that immediate took to Twitter and other media to amplify the moment actually pushed the NFL owners to do the right thing.
Could Helu have come back?
Mike Shanahan was asked yesterday if Roy Helu Jr. would have been eligible for the injured reserve designation that would have permitted him to be reactivated later this season. Here is what he said:
“[He] could have been potentially. But, he said the last one took about three months and this one, he felt was worse. But anything longer than eight weeks, you have a chance.”
It’s a moot question since a team is allowed to designate only one player for the list and the Redskins burned their designation on long snapper Nick Sundberg. That move was questioned at the time and it will continue to be debated. If Helu could be ready to play a few weeks ahead of schedule he could have been activated for the Redskins’ tough stretch run.
One could argue that the Redskins would be better off with Justin Snow, who has been flawless in two games, snapping and Helu, even though he may be at only 90%, running the ball on fresh legs than they would be with Sundberg snapping and Helu watching.
