Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, September 22, the day before RG3 and the Redskins open their home season against the Bengals.
Chat starts at 12:30
We’ll get the chat underway live from the press box at FedEx Field at 12:30 with Tarik, Jen X, and yours truly talking about what unfolds as Robert Griffin III makes his official FedEx Field debut.
I might get it going early so keep an eye on Twitter (@Rich_Tandler). It should be an entertaining game, pull out a second screen while you’re watching and join in. The chat software works great on a tablet or smart phone so get involved wherever you are.
Garçon’s injury
It would be a major upset if Pierre Garçon played against the Bengals. When what seemed to be a fairly minor foot injury ends up costing a player two games and counting there is cause for concern.
There is some depth at the position and the offense hasn’t been crippled without him. Aldrick Robinson has seen a lot of action in Garçon’s absence and he has caught six passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
But they didn’t give Garçon a $42 million contract because Robinson is just as good. The offense won’t be all that it can be until a healthy Garçon is on the field for 60 snaps a game.
Garçon played all 16 games last year but he did miss two games in 2010 with a hamstring problem and two in 2009 due to a hand injury. So it’s not really alarming if he missed a couple of games this year. But if he’s out longer—and we really have no idea if he will be or won’t be—it will start to be an issue for an offense that needs all the help it can get to compensate for an injured and ineffective defense.
Wilson in the right place at the right time
Here is what Mike Shanahan said about bringing back Chris Wilson after the linebacker was out of football last year:
“Sometimes, when you release somebody, they’re looking for an opportunity to show other people what they can do. I think that was the story with Chris. We like Chris. He helped us on special teams. He went to Philly looking for that opportunity and for whatever reason, it didn’t work out for him. I saw him in our building one day and I said, ‘I’d like to have you back if you want to come.’ He was in the building the next day. We signed him to a contract. Sometimes, it’s as simple as that.”
Wilson will compete with Rob Jackson and Markus White for playing time at right outside linebacker in the absence of Brian Orakpo.
