Here is what you need to know on this Thursday, September 6, a mere three days before the Redskins take on the Saints in the NFL season opener.
Good news mixed with bad on injury front
The news that Brandon Meriweather will miss 2-4 weeks with a knee injury was a bad note in what generally was good injury news for the Redskins on Wednesday.
There has been some skepticism that guard Kory Lichtensteiger would be ready to go after getting arthroscopic knee surgery about four and a half weeks ago. He was a full participant in practice yesterday and Mike Shanahan said that barring a setback he should be able to play against the Saints on Sunday.
If the Redskins are going to have any chance of hanging with the Saints they will have to get some pressure on Drew Brees so it’s very good news that Brian Orakpo also practiced fully on Tuesday and should be good to go on Sunday.
Intensity up a notch for Griffin, Redskins
There are no preseason games in college (more evidence that the NFL doesn’t need four of them, but I digress) so something as subtle as the transition from the exhibition season to games that count is something new for Robert Griffin III.
“I didn’t think I would, but I do feel different,” said Griffin when asked about the transition. “It’s real. It’s not that guys weren’t out here working hard or anything like that, but I think everyone’s working knowing that stuff counts. This game’s going to count and hopefully we can go out and get that victory.”
There was a very subtle but noticeable pickup in focus and intensity in the portion of practice that we were able to observe. It’s time to get down to business.
