Here is what you need to know on this Monday, September 10, the day after Robert Griffin III had one of the best NFL debuts that any quarterback has ever had.
For some, the points soared
The Redskins were part of one of the highest-scoring opening weekends in NFL history. They were one of four teams to score at least 40 points yesterday; the others were the Jets (48-28 over Bills), Bears (41-21 over Colts), and Falcons (40-24 over the Chiefs).
That is the first time that that many teams have scored 40 points or more in the season opener since 1954.
This is the fifth time that the Redskins have scored 40 or more in their opener. The last time the did it was in their 45-0 pasting of the Lions to open their Super Bowl 1991 season. They had winning seasons
Not a rookie but . . .
There were plenty of accolades yesterday for the Redskins’ rookie backfield of quarterback Robert Griffin III and running back Alfred Morris. But there was another offensive skill player who played well in his NFL debut.
Aldrick Robinson spent almost all of last year on the practice squad before the Redskins activated him for the final game of the season. He did not play in that game so he took the field for the first time on Sunday in the Superdome.
Robinson’s second catch was a nice grab in the end zone to turn a third and goal at the five into a second-quarter touchdown. In the third quarter he caught a 10-yard Griffin pass and scooted up the sideline for 29 yards. That converted a second and 19 situation and the Redskins got a field goal out of the drive.
In all, four catches for 54 yards for the 2011 sixth-round draft pick out of SMU. He’s not going to be a featured receiver but Robinson can be the kind of complimentary player that makes defenses wary of paying too much attention to Pierre Garçon, Josh Morgan, and the rest.
No Victory Monday
The Redskins will report to work today; the Victory Monday tradition is being shelved for the time being, perhaps until the compile many more meaningful victories.
