Here is what you need to know on this Monday, Sept. 9, six days before the Redskins open their season at New Orleans.
Redskins put in O-line waiver claims
The Redskins kept a total of nine offensive linemen on their 53-man roster but they apparently wanted to change either the quality or the quantity of the players they kept.
According to media reports, the Redskins put in waiver claims on two interior linemen released by other teams.
Redskins put in a claim on a center Cody Wallace, per a report on Pro Football Talk. Wallace is a journeyman lineman who has spent time with the 49ers, who drafted him in the fourth round in 2008, Lions and Jets. However, the Bucs also claimed Wallace and they had priority so the 28-year-old is headed to Tampa Bay.
Waiver priority is based on 2011 records.
The Redskins also were beaten out on a claim for former Texans guard Shelley Smith. Adam Schefter reported via Twitter that Washington, Seattle, Tennessee and St. Louis put in waiver claims on Smith, a 2010 sixth-round pick of Houston’s. The Rams have waiver priority over every team except the Colts so they were awarded Smith.
The Redskins already are carrying nine offensive linemen on their roster so it is doubtful that they would have added Smith or Wallace without releasing another player. It seems likely that they would have released an interior lineman had they been awarded one of the two players. The reserve interior linemen are second-year guard-tackle Maurice Hurt and rookies Adam Gettis and Josh LeRibeus.
Note that these are not necessarily the only offensive linemen claimed by the Redskins, these are just the only two that were reported.
Come kick off the season with me

Today’s schedule
2:20—There will be a “conditioning session” that is closed to the media after stretching. Limited player availability coming off the field, Mike Shanahan will not address the media.
In case you missed it
The Redskins are going to dispense with the fancy stuff on kickoffs now that they have Billy Cundiff on board.
20 in 20 looks at Jarvis Jenkins’ prospects for this season.
Days until: Redskins @ Saints 6; home opener vs. Bengals 20; RG3 vs. Cam @ FedEx Field 62; Thanksgiving Redskins @ Cowboys 80

Interesting, I imagine that the Redskins would have tried to put Adam Gettis on the practice squad if they could have signed one of these others.
Sometimes you can't wait for players to develop, and clearly the Redskins are looking for some veteran help so they can win more games now.
