Here is what you need to know on this Thursday, October 4, three days before the Redskins take on the undefeated Atlanta Falcons at FedEx Field.
Points soaring
Scoring 20 points in an NFL game is no big deal. In the 15 games played in Week 4 14 teams posted at least that many points.
But the Redskins have been scoring challenged in recent seasons so when the Redskins string together a few games where they score the equivalent of at least three touchdowns and a field goal it is notable. On Sunday against the Falcons, the Redskins will be trying to score 20 points or more for the fifth time in five games this season.
If they can do that, it will be the first time they have scored 24 points or more in the first five games of a season since 1999.
The Redskins have scored 123 points, the fourth most in team history after four games. That ’99 team posted 150 in the first four games, the 1991 squad got out of the gate with 146 points in the first quarter and the 1975 edition of the Redskins scored 127.
All three of those Redskins teams finished the season with winning records with the 1999 team winning the NFC East and, of course, the 1991 edition rolling to the Super Bowl championship.
Is RG3 getting the Brady-Manning treatment?
When Robert Griffin III was asked about how he thought the referees did in calling personal fouls and protecting him from illegal hits, he revealed that he got a little advice from referee Alberto Riveron.
I thought they were on point, especially the head ref. Actually, one time I carried out my fake and didn’t put my hands up and he came and found me and said, ‘Make sure you put your hands up.’ I said, ‘All right, you got it. I got you. You’re watching. That’s good.’ I thought it was great. They protected me a lot more as the quarterback out there, which is how it’s supposed to be.
When a quarterback gets coached up by the referee on how to make sure that he doesn’t get roughed up, you have to wonder if there is some star treatment going on. After many years of seeing other teams’ players playing under a different set of rules, it looks like the Redskins and their fans could get a chance to see how the other side lives.
There were two personal fouls called against the Bucs for hitting Griffin.
