Here is what you need to know on this Sunday, October 21, the day the Redskins start their division schedule against the Giants.
Chat starts at 12:30
You know the drill. Drop by here at 12:30 as Tarik El-Bashir and I chat about the game from the press box at MetLife Stadium and Jen X pipes in from out Bethesda studios.
I might get things going a little early so make sure you’re following me on Twitter @Rich_TandlerCSN for updates.
See you then.
RG3 on the money
As calculated by Pro Football Focus, Robert Griffin III is on pace to be the most accurate quarterback in the NFL since at least 2008.
They calculate an adjusted completion percentage for quarterbacks that accounts for factors that are not completely under the quarterbacks control, things like drops, passes thrown away intentionally and passes batted down at the line. Doing the math, they determine that if the receivers had no drops he would have completed 82.7 percent of his passes. That’s the best in the NFL through six games.
PFF has been doing such calculations since 2008 and the best performance over a full season since then is the 80.6 percent by Aaron Rogers last year.
Of course, things like drops and batted passes are part of the game and always have been. But RG3 doesn’t need the esoteric math and judgment calls to let you know that he is one of the most accurate passers in the game. His raw, unadjusted completion percentage is 70.2. That also is tops in the NFL.
Does the fact that he has thrown only 9 passes 20 yards or more past the line of scrimmage help his completion percentage? Most of the other leading quarterbacks have thrown over twice that many. Yes, the shorter passes do help. But 70 percent is 70 percent and it’s still impressive. And he still is averaging 8.3 yards per pass attempt, second in the NFL. His passes are getting the Redskins places.
Rocca reportedly will punt
It doesn’t look like the Redskins will have to juggle punters.
According to various media reports Sav Rocca passed his test today and he will handle the punting duties against the Giants.
The Redskins worked out three punters on Friday including former Eagle Chas Henry and former Steeler Daniel Sepulveda.
