At first, Osi Umenyiora had nothing but distain for the Redskins new rookie quarterback, saying that he was going to refer to the second overall pick in the draft as “Bob Griffin” until he accomplished something in the NFL.
After Griffin passed the Redskins to a opening-day win over the Saints, the Giants veteran defensive end was impressed enough to say that he would be willing to call him by his more common nickname, RG3.
Now, five games later with the Redskins getting ready to play the Giants, Umenyiora has elevated Griffin to royalty. Today, he told the New York media that he will now refer to the Redskins quarterback as “Sir Robert Griffin III”.
There was perhaps a touch of levity and/or sarcasm there. But in any case there isn’t much higher for Griffin to go after being some guy named bob just a few months ago.
Update: Here is the complete quote from Umyenyiora:
"His name is Sir. His name is Sir Robert Griffin," Umenyiora said today. "That is what I refer to him now. I mean, look at what he’s done. Look at the way he’s performed as a rookie. You don’t see players come into the league and perform like that at that stage in their career, so all the respect in the world goes to him, and he is a phenomenal football player."
