Bob Griffin made another appearance today at Redskins Park. But he showed up only briefly.
If you recall, Bob was born last summer when Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora was doing some trash talking on New York radio station WFAN.
“Who is this RG3 guy you guys keep talking about?’’ Umenyiora asked nobody in particular. “You talking about Bob Griffin? You guys are giving him a cool nickname already and everything.
“When he does anything in the NFL we’re gonna call him RG3. Right now he’s Bob Griffin.”
Umenyiora changed his tune after Griffin passed for 320 yards and led the Redskins to a win over the Saints in the rookies NFL debut. That performance brought Griffin some instant respect.
“Yes, I will call him RG3,” said Umenyiora after that game.
Bob hasn’t been heard from since but the New York media inquired about him when they had RG3 on the phone for a conference call.
Griffin said that a few people jokingly called him Bob for a few days after Umenyiora’s original comments.
"Other than that, it really hasn't stuck," Griffin said Wednesday. "I don't plan on letting it stick, either."
Griffin showed his savvy by heaping praise on the guy who will be trying to chase him down and sack him on Sunday.
"Osi's a guy that's proven himself in the league. He's a sack master, he's done a lot of great things over his career, so I didn't mind it at all," he said. "I got where he was coming from, I know why everybody blew it out of proportion because it's the Redskins and the Giants. But I also remember him saying after the Saints game he would call me whatever I wanted to be called. So I mean, it's not something to build up or make a big deal of.
"Whatever he wants to call me, it doesn't matter. I've had people call me worse things on the field. It doesn't bother me at all. But I look forward to playing against those guys."
With the way Griffin has been playing, it doesn’t look like Bob will be coming back anytime soon.
