Here is what you need to know on this Wednesday, November 7, 11 days before the Redskins take on the Eagles at FedEx Field.
Dropback passing passé
Kyle Shanahan talked about how difficult it is to drop straight back and pass against today’s athletic defensive lines:
The hardest thing to do for any team is to drop back and go against some of these D-linemen. Teams that do it too much, usually it comes back to get you. A lot of teams haven’t won Super Bowls by just dropping back and throwing. Teams have done it, but it usually catches up to you at some time. It’s a lot easier when you’re sliding everyone together and you can do some play-pass and get them to play the run. When D-linemen are playing the pass, it’s usually a tough game.
This is part of the reason that the Redskins gave up so much to get Robert Griffin III. While the classic dropback pocket passer is hardly a thing of the past—Tom Brady and the Manning brothers are doing just fine, thank you—it may not be a style that can survive much in the future.
