As you may have heard, the Redskins are on pace to give up over 5,000 passing yards this year. That would top the NFL record of 4,796 yards the Packers gave up last year. Even allowing for differences in rules that have made passing easier, that is quite an embarrassing performance.
However, they may not end up setting that dubious record. For one thing, the weather will get worse and perhaps not as friendly to the passing game. In addition, the quarterbacks the Redskins will face in the second half of the season are not performing as well as the QB’s they went up against the first eight games.
In their first eight games, the Redskins have faced four of the top 10 quarterbacks in the NFL in terms of passer rating and seven of the top 16. The lowest-ranked quarterback they have faced is Sam Bradford, who is 20th.
Here are the quarterbacks they have faced so far:
Rank-Name-Rating
3—Matt Ryan 103.0
5—Ben Roethlisberger 101.4
8—Josh Freeman 93.3
10—Drew Brees 93.0
12—Eli Manning 89.1
13—Andy Dalton 87.7
16—Christian Ponder 85.8
20—Sam Bradford 82.4
It needs to be noted here that these quarterbacks have good ratings in part because they have had a chance to fatten up their stats against the Redskins’ pass defense. Still, they are among the better quarterbacks in the league this year.
Now, take a look at who they play the rest of the way this year:
Rank-Name-Rating
12—Eli Manning 89.1
18—Joe Flacco 84.0
25—Tony Romo 78.8 (will play twice)
26—Michael Vick 78.6 (will play twice)
29—Cam Newton 75.2
32—Brandon Weeden 70.8
Certainly, every one of those quarterbacks, starting with Newton on Sunday, will be looking forward to turning around their subpar seasons against the Redskins’ shaky secondary. It will be interesting to see how well each of those quarterbacks plays compared to his body of work for the season.
