Morris milestones
It is pretty well knows that Alfred Morris is about to go over 1000 yards for the season. He now has 982 yards so he should pass that milestone sometime in the first half against the Giants.
But it is not so well known that Morris has a good shot at breaking a significant team record.
I got a question on Twitter from my friend @CarbonPrimo:
What is the rookie record for rushing yards by a Redskins running back?
Before I could reply, my friend @lifelongskinsfan replied:
Reggie Brooks with 1,063 rushing yards with a 4.8 average.
That was in 1993, the one forgettable season the Richie Petitbon was the head coach.
So Morris needs 82 yards to break the record. Considering that he got 120 yards against the Giants the last time they played there is a decent chance he will surpass Brooks’ total on Monday night.
Brooks was a second-round pick of the Redskins, selected 45th overall. Morris was taken considerably later, in the sixth round with the 173rd pick.
Howard Schnellenberger, Morris’ coach at Florida Atlantic couldn’t believe that Morris lasted so long. “It’s inconceivable to me that 32 teams passed on him five and six times until Washington took him,” he told the Washington Post. “Were 172 players better than Alfred?”
In hindsight, the answer to Schnellenberger’s question is no, there were not. But the Redskins are glad that things worked out the way they did.
