Scoreboard watching results mixed
The Redskins got some help in their quest for a wild card playoff spot on Sunday but one key result didn’t go their way.
The Vikings lost to the Packers and the Bucs fell to the Broncos. Those results dropped Minnesota and Tampa Bay to 6-6 on the season, which is what the Redskins’ record will be if they beat the Giants tonight. And since Washington beat both of those teams head to head they would hold the tiebreaker advantage.
However, other pieces of the puzzle did not fall into place. Most importantly, the Seahawks beat the Bears in overtime and moved to 7-5. That puts Seattle in the driver’s seat for the second wild card slot. The biggest advantage they have in addition to their one-game lead over the rest of the pack is the fact that they don’t play a true road game the rest of the season. They have three at home and one against the Bills in Toronto.
Also on the down side, the Cowboys won last night to move to 6-6. The Redskins have a head-to-head win over the Cowboys and one division loss compared to the Cowboys’ two. And, don’t look now, but the Rams’ win over the 49ers moves them to within a half game of the 6-6 group at 5-6-1.
Of course, the Redskins have to win tonight to get to 6-6 for all of this to matter and that will be no easy task. We’ll take a more detailed look at the playoff picture later today and tomorrow.
