Here is what you need to know on this Saturday, December 8, one day before the Redskins take on the Ravens at FedEx Field.
Blogging all weekend, chatting tomorrow at 12:30
The Minute-by-Minute blog, with news and nuggets to carry you up until game time, will get started this afternoon and count you down all they way through the end of the game. I’ll also have a window set up with a running Twitter Q&A in which you will be able to participate.
We’ll have Tarik, Tandler, and Jen X reporting from the press box at FedEx Field for the biggest game in, well, six days. The chat will get going at 12:30 and go through the end of the game. Pull up a second screen and join in, it’s always a lot of fun.
See you then.
Shanahan wants to keep kickoffs the way they are
The trial balloon that Roger Goodell floated on turning kickoffs into plays from scrimmage was not received well by Mike Shanahan.
While he is in favor of enhancing player safety, he thinks that the 2011 rule change to move kickoffs up to the 35 did what it was intended to do in that regard.
“I think it’s good right now,” he said. “I think you’ve still got the kickoffs in the game. I think it’s been positive – not as many injuries as a year ago, so I think it’s a big plus.”
The proposal, put out there in a Time magazine cover story on Goodell, is to eliminate kickoffs. At the beginning of each half and after a score, a team would line up for a scrimmage play at its own 30. It would automatically be fourth down and 15 to go. The team could punt or try to get the 15 yards either via a fake punt or a regular scrimmage play.
Shanahan said that the impetus for change will come from injury data collected during the two years the kickoff has been from the 35.
“We’ll see the stats at the end of the year,” he said. “Everything usually is based on that.”
