Here is what you need to know on this Wednesday, January 23, 29 days before the NFL Combine.
Redskins still in Super Drought
The NFC’s millennium non-Super club shrunk by one member on Sunday.
Unfortunately, the Redskins are still one of the teams who are in it.
Only five of the 16 teams in the NFC have not made the Super Bowl since the 2000 season. There were six until Sunday when the 49ers won the NFC championship for the first time since the 1994 season.
The NFC teams without a Super Bowl appearance since 2000 are the Vikings (last appeared in 1976), Redskins (1991), Cowboys (1995), Falcons (1998) and the Lions, who are the lone NFC team that has never made it to the Super Bowl.
Right now, it looks like the Redskins might be closer than any other team to breaking that Super Bowl absence string with the exception of the Falcons. Washington and Atlanta are the only two teams of the five who made the playoffs this past season.
Another ROY for RG3
Although it’s not the “official” one, Robert Griffin III has taken home another rookie of the year award.
Earlier, he won recognition as the rookie of the year from the Pro Football Writers of American and Pro Football Weekly magazine. That award was voted on by members of the PFWA, composed primarily of the beat writers who bring fans coverage of their teams on a daily basis.
Now Griffin has been named the Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News. That award is made based on the votes of some 800 NFL players, coaches, and executives. Griffin got 363 votes, easily beating out quarterbacks Andrew Luck of the Colts (213) and Russell Wilson of the Seahawks (124).
“Simply put, Griffin returned legitimate hope for a championship to the Redskins,” TSN said in announcing the award. “He led them to a division title for the first time since 1999 and created a buzz throughout Washington and the NFL. He put fear in opponents, who knew facing Griffin was like facing lightning ready to strike.”
The rookie of the year award that the NFL has deemed to be “official”, the one determined by a panel of 50 voters selected by the Associated Press, will be announced during an awards show the night before the Super Bowl.
