Here is what you need to know on this Thursday, January 17, 54 days before the start of NFL free agency.
Kiper says Redskins may tap safety Thomas
Mel Kiper’s first mock draft came out on Wednesday. Since it runs just one round, the ESPN draft guru doesn’t project a pick for the Redskins in his mock.
However, he did provide a possible name yesterday on a media conference call. He says the Redskins could like safety Phillip Thomas of Fresno State. Thomas is 6-1, 215 and he led the nation in interceptions with eight.
“When you think about that position at that point in the draft, I think Phillip Thomas of Fresno State is a very underrated player,” said Kiper. “Had a lot of productivity this year, was around the ball a lot, had a lot of tackles, a lot of impact hits, good in coverage as well.”
So, there you go. Draft season is officially underway with 98 days to go before the first round, 99 days before the Redskins are on the clock.
Morris will talk to Browns
With all of the hiring of head coaches going on and subsequent shuffling of coaching staffs, it seemed odd that we have had no reports of any Redskins’ coordinators or other assistant coaches drawing interest from other teams.
We now have one.
Rick Stroud Tampa Bay Times reported on Twitter that secondary coach Raheem Morris will interview to be the Browns’ defensive coordinator. Our Tarik El-Bashir has confirmed the report.
Morris came to the Redskins a year ago after the Bucs fired him as their head coach. It was reported that he was offered the job as the Vikings’ defensive coordinator after he had verbally accepted the Redskins job but before he had signed a contract. Morris decided to honor his verbal commitment.
The Redskins put a clause in Morris’ contract that would keep the team from blocking Morris from interviewing for and accepting a position as a coordinator.
