Here is what you need to know on this Thursday, January 3, three days before the Redskins take on the Seahawks in the NFC playoffs at FedEx Field.
Slightly warmer than last Sunday
The weather forecast for Sunday looks similar to what it was for the Cowboys game but a bit warmer. The high will be in the upper 40’s and things will start to cool as the sun sets shortly after the 4:30 kickoff. No precipitation or high winds are in the forecast.
Morris runs the table on awards
Redskins running back Alfred Morris found out Wednesday morning that he was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 200 yards and three touchdowns against the Cowboys. His awards wall picked up a couple more plaques in the afternoon.
Morris was voted the NFL rookie of the week for Week 17 in a fan vote on NFL.com. It was the third time this year that Morris won that honor; he also claimed it for Week 7 (@ Giants) and Week 14 (Ravens). Quarterback Robert Griffin III was voted rookie of the week seven times this year and backup QB Kirk Cousins won it once. Doing the math, that means that the Redskins had the top rookie performance for 11 of the 17 weeks of the season.
Morris also won fan voting for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week on NFL.com. That vote is for the week’s best rushing performance and Morris beat out Adrian Peterson to win it.
Return of Aldrick?
Every few days I get a question about the whereabouts of Aldrick Robinson. He caught long touchdown passes to spark the late November wins over the Eagles and Cowboys but he hasn’t been heard from since then. The first-year speedster out of SMU has only played a couple of dozen snaps in the five games since then and has not caught a pass.
This could be a good game for Robinson to break out. With all of the size in the Seattle secondary (two of the starters are 6-3, another is 6-4), devising a way to get behind the defense with Robinson’s speed would be a good route to the end zone.
A lot of Robinson’s chances will depend on what the offensive coaches see from the back end of Seattle defense in the early going. If they are being aggressive in going after the run that could set up play action with Robinson scoring a quick six points.
