Here is what you need to know on this Friday, January 4, two days before the Redskins and Seahawks meet in the NFC wild card playoffs at FedEx Field.
Follow up on Aldrick
Yesterday we addressed the missing Aldrick Robinson here and wondered if he might emerge in the playoff game on Sunday. Kyle Shanahan was asked about Robinson’s whereabouts in the offense since he caught long TD bombs in the first meetings with the Eagles and Cowboys. Here is what the offensive coordinator had to say.
“He’s been out there. He’s been doing the same stuff he’s been doing all year, but you only throw them to him when the coverage dictates it. Sometimes when you get a guy uncovered 50 yards down the field, teams tend to back up. He’s still running those same routes and stuff. Guys are backing up a little bit more and it really helps out guys underneath. He’s done a good job in a bunch of these games really scaring a lot DBs [defensive backs] and getting them out of there. It opens up stuff for people underneath and when he doesn’t, you’ve got to be willing to let it go.”
So, it looks like Robinson will have to add some more diversity to his game if he is going to get more play. But that doesn’t mean that Shanahan won’t try to see if he can get him loose on a deep one on Sunday.
Reason #1,145,772 to like RG3
NFL Films had Robert Griffin III wired for sound during last Sunday’s games. And there are a lot of cool sound bites captured in the Sound FX piece produced from the game (we can’t embed it but you can see it here). One that really struck me in particular was caught after Dallas defensive end Jason Hatcher was flagged for roughing the passer, a penalty that just about clinched the win for the Redskins. Hatcher was called for hitting RG3 in the head. Unable to find a referee who would listen to his protests, Hatcher turned to Griffin.
Hatcher: “I didn’t touch you in the face!”
RG3: “You’re right, you’re right.”
Hatcher (patting Griffin’s chest): “I hit you right here!”
RG3: “You’re right, you’re right.”
Even though that clearly was not the case, as shown in the screen shot below, Griffin was doing exactly what he should have done, taking the high road and letting the losers complain. Spoken like a 10-year veteran.
