I am often asked who will be the Redskins' third-string quarterback this season. The answer is Rex Grossman. Here is why:
With Matt Moore signed, top FA QBs left: 1. Jason Campbell 2. David Garrard 3. Chase Daniel 4. Drew Stanton 5. Josh Johnson 6. Vince Young.

I would argue that you could put Rex ahead of Young on the list but that's beside the point. Nobody on this list would be a big enough upgrade over Grossman to justify the effort needed to bring him in and teach him the offense when he's just a one-year solution anyway.
Mike Shanahan typically likes to roll with two QB's. Last year he kept Grossman around because the top two QB's were rookies. In 2014, there is not likely to be a third QB as RG3 and Kirk Cousins will be in their third seasons (and, yes, Cousins will probably be here in 2014). But with the uncertainty over Griffin's knee out there, there is a need to keep a third quarterback. Next year, assuming that RG3 is healthy, there will be another roster spot available.
In the meantime, the list of veteran free agent QB's, which resembles the proverbial waiver wire from hell, gives Rex some solid job security.
